Living the Faith

What we do as Catholics to stay on the road

The Core Obligations (The Non-Negotiables)

The Church sets out a baseline to keep your spiritual life healthy and connected to the community. These are often referred to as the Precepts of the Church:

  1. 1

Attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation

Participating in the Eucharistic liturgy weekly is the foundation of Catholic life.

  2. 2

Receive Holy Communion at least once a year

Specifically during the Easter season (though frequent receipt in a state of grace is encouraged).

  3. 3

Go to Sacramental Confession at least once a year

Especially if conscious of serious (mortal) sin, before receiving Communion.

  4. 4

Observe days of Fasting and Abstinence

Abstinence from meat: Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during Lent (14 and older). Fasting: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (one full meal, two smaller meals, ages 18–59).

  5. 5

    Support the Church

Contributing your time, talent, or financial resources to your local parish and the needy according to your means.

Building a Daily Rhythm of Prayer

Faith isn't just about Sunday — it's a daily relationship. Consistency matters far more than length.

Morning and Evening Prayer

Start or end your day with a simple conversation with God — offering your day, expressing gratitude, or asking for help.

The Rosary

A classic Catholic meditation on the lives of Jesus and Mary. If a full Rosary feels overwhelming, start with just one decade a day.

Scripture (Lectio Divina)

Reading the daily Mass readings (USCCB) is a great way to stay connected to the Bible and the liturgical season.

Getting Connected & Settled in Your Parish

Living your faith in isolation is tough. The parish is meant to be your spiritual home base.

Parish Life

Sacraments

  • Weekly Mass
  • Confession

Fellowship

  • Bible studies
  • New parishioner events

Service

  • St. Vincent de Paul
  • Volunteering at events

Introduce yourself to the Pastor: Let him know you're a new Catholic.

Find one small group or ministry: It makes a large parish feel smaller and gives you a community of peers.

Register officially: Fill out a parish registration form online or at the parish office.

Continuing Your Growth (Pacing Yourself)

A quick word of advice: Don't try to adopt every devotion, saint, fast, or pious habit all at once. Spiritual burnout is real. Pick one daily prayer habit and one area of study to focus on right now.
